The group meets once a fortnight on Mondays starting at 5.30pm and finishing at 7pm. We meet in St Mary’s Church Hall and the session begins with a time for chatting and socialising over a cup of tea and biscuits or to celebrate someone’s birthday. The meeting starts proper at 6pm with an opening prayer, then two worship songs, Bible stories and either craft, drama or games. We close with a creative prayer and two worship songs. We try to encourage everyone to participate in all aspects so that someone will pray, others will choose the worship songs, others will do the Bible reading and all of us take part in the craft/drama/games and the creative prayer. The final songs are chosen by members of the group.
We have a full programme of social events, which include going to a panto in the winter, visiting Chatterbox cafe to paint a pot in February, visiting Scropton Equine Centre [Riding for the Disabled] in springtime, a summer canal trip and a picnic at Rosliston Forestry Centre, a visit to Lichfield Cathedral in November, a Fish n Chip supper, visiting Hillfield Nursing Home to serve tea and sing worship songs.
We have people coming to our meetings from James Court in the centre of Burton and people from Community Homes in the Heritage Charity Group.
There is now a regular attendance at St Mary’s of members of the Group and we are very much a part of the community of St Mary’s, leading the congregation in prayers signed in Makaton. We continue to share in the life of St Mary’s – attending events such as Community Day and Tea Dances; and helping with fund-raising for Charities such as Christian Aid and Footprints Orphanage. The photo shows Nicholas handing a cheque of £50 to Sheila, who is Footprints representative in England. We raised this money in the group as part of our Lent Appeal.
The three of us – Jo, Heather and myself regularly meet up over a meal to pray, discuss and plan the programme for the sessions and forthcoming outings. We continue to value St Mary’s support and ask for ongoing prayers.
